Skills for Chicagoland’s Future offers unemployed and underemployed Chicagoland area residents access to immediate employment and train-to-hire opportunities – all at no cost. Unemployed and underemployed job seekers can create a profile and apply to the roles they are interested in. If their skills and qualifications match the requirements of an employer partner job seekers will be contacted by a Skills staff member. To learn more about job seeker services, please click here. What requirements must I meet for Skills to work with me?
Skills for Chicagoland’s Future serves jobs seekers who meet the following minimum requirements:
- Currently unemployed or underemployed
- Reside in the Chicagoland area
- Legal right to work in the United States
What is underemployment?
Being underemployed can take many different forms and has various meanings based on what definition you subscribe to. To be underemployed and eligible to work with Skills you must be one of the following
- Working less than 30 hours/week
- Working in a contract or temporary role with a definitive end date
- Working in a role outside of your core area of expertise
Is there a minimum experience level or skill set required to work with Skills?
No! Skills’ employer partners are looking for a range of talent that encompasses various experience levels and sets of skills.
Is there a cost to job seekers to use Skills?
Skills is a free service for job seekers!
Why would I apply through Skills’ website if I can apply directly to the same job on the hiring company’s website?
By applying through Skills’ website, you will have the advantage of Skills’ relationship with hiring companies and the dedicated Skills staff to help you along the hiring process.
Is there a limit to the number of roles I can apply to?
There is no limit to the amount of roles you can apply to.
I applied to a role, but haven’t heard anything. What should I do?
Unfortunately, we are not able to place everyone that applies to a position into that role. Skills’ team of Talent Acquisition Leads work closely with our hiring partners to find the best person(s) for each role. If you are found to be a fit for the role you will be contacted about next steps. If you are not a fit for one role, you can apply to any other role on our website that you feel qualified for.
I didn’t see any roles listed on scfjobs.com that I am interested in applying for, but I want to utilize Skills. What should I do?
The jobs listed on www.scfjobs.com are constantly changing. Create a profile and stay connected through our email notifications and follow Skills on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram. Then when you see a new role that you would like to apply to, simply log back in and apply!
Does Skills for Chicagoland’s Future guarantee job placement?
While we try our best to place as many job seekers as possible, we do not guarantee job placement. Please note, our employer partners make all of the final hiring decisions for their available positions.
Why does Skills require resident documentation?
Skills is a nonprofit organization that is grant funded and must follow certain criteria. To ensure we are fulfilling our obligation to our employer partners and grant funders we request documentation from all job seekers we work with. We value your privacy and security and do not share your information with 3rd party organizations.
Do I have to upload a resume every time I want to apply to a new position?
No. Once you’ve created a profile and uploaded a resume, that profile and resume remains attached to the positions you apply for. We encourage you to update that profile as you add items to your resume or if your contact information changes.

What if I found a job and want to remove my resume from your system?
Congratulations! Simply contact our office at 312.906.7200 and we will deactivate your profile.
Why do I have to interview with a Skills staff member and with the employer?
Skills’ employer partners rely on us to provide the best candidates possible for their roles. To ensure their standards are met, the Skills staff meets with every job seeker in person before referring them to an employer partner. This process also prepares the job seeker for their interview with the employer and increases their chances of getting hired.
What if I need to cancel an interview with a Skills for Chicagoland’s Future recruiter or employer?
If you need to cancel your interview, please contact the Skills staff member you have been in contact with as soon as possible. We do our best to reschedule the interview when possible. Please note, if Skills does not receive notification of your cancellation and you do not attend a scheduled interview, you will no longer be eligible to use Skills’ services in the future.
