The job market has been significantly impacted by the outbreak of COVID -19, but many businesses are seeing a spike in demand, creating a greater need for workers. Employment categories like grocery, package delivery services, medical supply, hospitals, and warehouse/logistics are among those conducting hiring sprees to combat the continued uptick in customer demand.
Nationally, over a dozen of America’s largest companies including Amazon, Walmart and Jewel are looking to hire nearly 700,000 people combined in the coming weeks. They are even altering their typical hiring process to get people working quickly and efficiently. For example, Walmart is drastically shortening their application process from 2 weeks to, in some cases, 24 hours.
The same urgent response is true with Chicago-based employers. For example, Jewel-Osco is leading the charge in staffing up their stores, looking to fill more than 3,000 job openings for in-store workers, delivery drivers and workers at its distribution center in Melrose Park. Jewel is also offering benefits for some of its open positions, including paid training, flexible scheduling, an employee discount and paid vacation. Additionally, employers like JPMorgan Chase, KeHE Distribution, and University of Chicago Medicine have continued their search for qualified talent throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Across all opportunities, employers are looking for flexible and adaptable people to bring onto their teams. With new developments surrounding this crisis popping up every day, it’s important to remain open and responsive.
